Several industries like chemical, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, marine, power plants, oil and gas, thermal plants, plumping system, and more are using forged fittings. Forged fittings are ordinary fittings manufactured using the process of forging. The steel grade SS 347H is forged to produce elbow, union, coupler, reducer, connector, adapter, tee, cross and other fittings. These are used in the mentioned and other vital industries for secure and leak-proof connection of pipes. However, the connection is not always made between the same diameter pipes. And for that different fitting is used. Moreover, not always the fitting is used for making a connection; they are even used to divert the direction of the pipe or fluid inside them.
The direction can be decided as per the applications and fittings like 45 degrees elbow, 90 degrees elbow, and more are used. On the other hand, it provides a connection between four pipes through different outlets and inlets. A tee and cross is a common example of SS 347/347H Forged Fittings. No matter for what purpose these are used, all have similar characteristics. These are infused in them by the use of SS 347 alloy. This grade of steel alloy has niobium content that gives them high corrosion resistance property especially at high temperatures.
However, when using at 450-900 degree C, the formation of chromium carbide precipitations begins which result in the intergranular corrosion. But the niobium content in the SS 347 prevents this formation and as a result, intergranular corrosion is not formed. Henceforth, forged fittings are useful for corrosive environments. Also, the high mechanical properties are the reason behind is workability at high-temperature service. The fittings also possess stress rupture and high creep resistance properties. Due to which they are considered to be used in sensitization and other corrosive environments. And for enhanced strength and creep resistance, SS 347H fittings are used.
