The grade is designed for usage in extreme corrosive conditions. It has been illustrated for several years and was originally developed to resist corrosion in dilute sulphuric acid.

Stainless Steel UNS N08904 Fasteners have outstanding tolerance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. The high resistance of grade 904L against stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the inclusion of large amounts of nickel in its composition. This is standardized and approved for pressure vessels used in various countries. Essentially, SS 904L is fully austenitic and is less prone to ferrite and sigma precipitation than standard austenitic grades with a very high molybdenum content. 904L SS Fasteners are less resistant to nitric acid than grades 304L and 310L which are free of molybdenum. In order to obtain optimum stress corrosion cracking tolerance for sensitive conditions, SS 904L requires to be treated with solution during cold working.
